Paul Araiza comes to COAST from Cathedral Catholic, one of San Diego’s premier high school volleyball programs. His coaching career began at Monte Vista as an assistant and from there he was able to gain experience developing and recruiting different types of athletes to play volleyball.

In 2005 he was offered a position as an assistant at Valhalla High School and in 2006 he assisted a runner up at the CIF DII Finals. Paul started as an assistant at Cathedral Catholic for both the men and women’s side of their respective Varsity programs, helping in CIF and State titles with both programs in 2010, 2011, and 2012. As Head Coach of Cathedral Catholic, Paul has won the Western League in 2013, 2014, and 2015. In 2014 and 2015 Paul lead the Dons to back-to-back CIF Finals appearances winning in 2014 and receiving a runner up in 2015. After winning the title in 2014, Araiza was awarded “Coach of the Year” for the CIF San Diego Open Division section. His boys’ team at COAST finished in the top 15 in the Open division in 2017 and he is hoping to improve upon his last finish as a club coach.

In new endeavors Paul has become the girls head coach at Point Loma High School. He is looking to continue his success on the girls’ side while he remains the boys’ head coach at Cathedral. He also runs the girls beach volleyball club team at San Diego State University where he hopes it can grow as the sport does into a DI program.

A San Diego native, Araiza started playing volleyball at the University of San Diego High School (Cathedral Catholic). He then went on to Grossmont College and ended up playing on San Diego State’s NCAA team. At SDSU, Araiza graduated with a BS in Psychology. He is currently going back to school to become an Adapted P.E. Teacher and still pursues volleyball professionally on the AVP Tour.
