Coaching: Girls

Michelle Gardiner brings an impressive 30 years of volleyball coaching and instruction experience to our club.  She has an extremely diverse background, coaching teams at nearly every level including NCAA Division1 for nearly 15 years, US Women’s National teams experience, high school and club coaching, and a successful private instruction business called “Volleyball Elite” for 15 years as well.

Michelle coached at Universities such as Northern Arizona, Western Carolina, Utah State, Idaho State and Cal Poly SLO.  She head coached WCU to 4 consecutive 20+ win seasons and her Lady Cats had the longest active 20-win season streak in the league at the time.

Originally from La Mesa, CA (playing for Grossmont HS and San Diego Volleyball Club), Michelle most recently coached Santa Fe Christian Schools as an assistant for the varsity girls and boys teams in 2015/16.  She also head coached Cactus Shadows high school (Cave Creek, AZ) to a Cinderella season making it to the Elite 8 in the state tourney in 2012.

On a national level, she served as a professional development intern in 1996 for the Women’s U.S. Olympic team.  She was also an administrative assistant at the United States Olympic Festival in Boulder, CO in the summer of 1995.

In the summer of 2001, she was appointed as the top assistant coach for the US Women’s Deaf National team.  Those teams earned a silver medal at the 2001 Deaflympics played in Rome, Italy and a bronze medal in Melbourne, Australia (2005).

She was twice named Los Padres Athletic League COACH OF THE YEAR in 1990 and 1991 during her earliest coaching years.  During that time, Michelle was also assisting the coaching staff at Cal Poly SLO, her alma mater and coaching the San Luis Obispo Juniors Volleyball Club.

Michelle was a 5’8 outside hitter at Cal Poly SLO from 1986-1989 where she capped off her collegiate playing career by being named an NCAA Division I ALL- AMERICAN. After being named to the Big West Conference All-Freshman team in 1986, she earned 2nd team all-conference honors in 1988 and received 1st team recognition in 1989.  Twice named the university’s FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR, she still owns many school records there…including career kills (1,810), attempts (4,676), aces (66), and kills per game (5.12) and single match records for kills (44 against SDSU), attempts (93) and aces (8).

In addition to her collegiate career, Michelle has extensive national and international playing experience including team spent in 1990 with the USA Women’s National Team.  She also played for the Gold Medal winning team in the 1989 Olympic Festival.  In 1997 she played professionally in Switzerland.  She competed as well for the 1995 National Volleyball Association regular-season champion Utah Predators and the 1996 Professional Volleyball league Utah Predators. Michelle has also trained and competed in pro beach tournaments in the past.  She currently plays beach weekly to stay active in the sport she loves so much.

Michelle earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with a concentration in teaching/coaching in 1992.  She received her Master’s degree in Athletic Administration from Idaho State in 1993.  She is happily married to husband Ken and they have 2 daughters Blair (11) and Bryn (8).
