Head Coach Velda Knutson

Velda grew up in San Diego, California, and became a rated beach player at the age of 16, and continued playing at the top level through her teens.  She played for Point Loma High School where her teammates and coach honored her with the teams MVP award. She also earned herself a spot on the CIF, All League, 1st Team.  Velda played in college but had to give it up for personal reasons.

She started coaching for her daughters by starting a 12u team at Starlings, Mission Bay. She has coached at a number of clubs in San Diego as her daughters have progressed.  Her daughters have played for the Elite National Coast teams; 13-1, 14-1, and 15-2. This is Velda’s third year coaching at Coast with 8 years experience and over 15 teams.  She also coaches many clinics and received certifications from LA84, and Irvine All Coaches, coaching clinics.

Velda started the Standley Middle School Volleyball Program five years ago contributing to the girls volleyball community of University City.  There has been numerous girls go through her program and succeed at the high school level.  She is about to receive a degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in education to supplement her coaching skills and knowledge.

She coaches the fundamentals with enthusiasm and fun; teaching the players they can achieve what they believe by introducing the concept of visualization, positive self talk, self-coaching and mental discipline. They will realize a new level of personal potential.  She is a very positive coach with high expectations that has a way of pulling the best out of her players.  Velda’s love and enthusiasm of the game is contagious and your girls are sure to love it as well.
