Head Coach Chris Spalding
Chris attended Aptos High
School (Santa Cruz county) where he played football, basketball and
baseball earning several All Monterey Bay League honors. After
graduating in 1975, he played strong safety for Cabrillo College in
Aptos, CA before transferring to Graceland College in Lamoni, IA.
On a full football scholarship, he received All District honors in
football as a free safety and kick returner. In 1980, Chris signed as an
undrafted free agent with NFL powerhouse, the Kansas City Chiefs. He
played in three
preseason games. After red shirting his sophomore year at Graceland, Chris received a volleyball scholarship to compliment his football scholarship and played for the legendary volleyball Hall of Fame coach, L. Rod Schall, who devised and implemented the statistical system still used by the USA national team. In both his junior and senior seasons, Chris was an NAIA honorable mention selection as a setter and his squads won the NAIA national championship in 1979.
Chris received his B.A. in Physical Education from Graceland and after graduating in 1980, played briefly for the U-23 (now known as A-3) Junior National team as setter. in 1981, he traveled to the Dominican Republic to participate in the NORCECA championships and saw action against Canada, Puerto Rico, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the eventual tournament champions Cuba. He also played in the 1979 National Sports Festival (now the US Olympic Festival) as a setter for the South men's volleyball squad.
In 1980, Chris was named head coach for the NCAA D-III independent UC Santa Cruz men's volleyball team. He coached the Banana Slugs to a 4th place finish in the All Cal tournament and 4th place in the California Collegiate League defeating the #9 nationally ranked Stanford Cardinal along the way, knocking them out of the national rankings. He coached At UCSC for two seasons.
Chris coached the Santa Cruz Falcons boy's 17-1's club team from '80-'82 and played on the beach for several years earning a AA rating. He then left the game of volleyball behind and concentrated on pursuing his career of choice, Athletic Training.
From '82-'84, Chris traveled internationally with the USA men's national team's medical staff as ATC while earning his M.A. in Athletic Training from San Jose State in 1983.
After returning to the coaching ranks in 2007, Chris co-coached the Mission Bay Starlings 14s and the Bridge 17-1s team. Chris was the Varsity coach at Hilltop High School from 2008 to 2011. Chris received his USVA IMPACT coaching certification in 2009 and his USVA CAP I certification in 2010.
Chris was the Owner and Director and 18s Head Coach for the Del Sol
Volleyball Club from 2008-2011 before merging with Coast South for the
2012 season. Chris will be the Varsity Assistant at Otay Ranch starting
this upcoming fall season.
When not playing and coaching, Chris is a Certified Athletic Trainer.
Receiving his NATA/BOC certification in 1983, he interned for the San
Francisco 49ers during the 1983 season and was the head trainer at Menlo
College from 1990-1994. He then moved to Stanford University serving as
an ATC/PTA through 2001. As a Department of the Navy civilian, he
currently directs the Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation facility for
Naval Special Warfare Group THREE - a branch of SOCOM and the Navy SEALs
and SWCC community. Chris was the Chief Medical Officer for the Tongan
National Olympic Committee from 1987-1995 and the American Samoan
National Olympic Committee from 1997-2008 and attended the Los Angeles,
Seoul, Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney and Athens Olympiads.
In his free time, Chris enjoys eating sushi, Thai food, Hawai'ian plate
lunch from L&L Drive-In, playing Guitar Hero and Rock Band (on medium)
and playing flag football and sand volleyball in Coronado.
